LUTON KIDS GO MAD FOR MAD HATTER HATS AND EASTER BONNETS AT THE MALL LUTON

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

easter-bonnet-worn-by-frey-white-3-years-olda1Spring is officially here! In true Luton style, local children are being invited to take part in a special Mad Hatter and Easter Bonnet workshop to celebrate the fact that Easter is on its way.

The event, which is completely free, is the third Funday Sunday Kids’ Club held at The Mall Luton. It will take place on the 28th March between 11am and 4pm and all children are welcome to join in the fun.

Luton, the home of the ‘Hatters’ and famous for its international hat trade, has always been at the cutting-edge of hat design. And there are sure to be some wonderful millinery creations in The Mall Luton on the 28th March! Every child will get the opportunity to create a funky hat to wear home or to give away as a fabulous Easter present. The workshop will take place at Melson Square (outside Mothercare) and the first 100 children to arrive will receive a complimentary gift from the Mall Monster.

Over 350 children have enjoyed the Funday Sunday events in The Mall Luton so far this year. With Easter just around the corner, and this month’s theme also including the much anticipated Alice in Wonderland film, children should have plenty of inspiration to create hats and bonnets that early (and existing) Luton hat makers would be proud of.

“Luton is very proud to be the home of the millinery trade,” Says Lavinia Holland, Marketing Manger for the Mall Luton.”So we are very excited about this month’s Funday Sunday Kids’ Club. Judging by the success of the clubs in January and February, I think children will love it - as it involves dressing up and being creative! It is always lovely to see the children take home something they have made themselves which they are really proud of.”

Every child can pick up a free “Stamp Me” loyalty card if they have not been to the club before. This loyalty card lists the dates and theme of every Funday Sunday Kids’ Club in 2010 and tells children what they will be making at each session - so they can look forward to more fun throughout the year.

The next Funday Sunday Kids’ Club event will take place on April 25th 2010 and will be dedicated to celebrating the new Robin Hood film by making Robin Hood hats and Maid Marion crowns!

Ends.

THE GODDESS OF LOVE, THE MALL LUTON AND A VERY EXCITING COMPETITION

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

mym-inanna-019If Inanna is the Goddess of Love, then there is no doubt that Mohammad Malkawi from Radlett is set on a labour of love. In less than a year since he first found beautiful Syrian soap in France, he has sourced it, imported it, retailed it – and is now through to the finals of a National retail competition: Make Your Mark in Retail 2010.

Over the next two weeks Mohammad, the owner of soap and jewellery business Inanna, will be competing for the retail opportunity of a lifetime. Over £15,000 worth of prizes is up for grabs, including six months’ free trading in a retail merchandising unit (RMU) in The Mall Luton, plus a place at the prestigious British Shops & Stores Association Summer School at Keble College Oxford. Inanna was one of four businesses selected from 15 entries received by The Mall Luton to go through to the regional finals. Over a two week trading period the performance of each of the four businesses will be evaluated by The Mall Luton for sales success, customer service and retailing skills

Mohammad was inspired to set-up the business, named after the Sumerian Goddess of Love, after literally falling in love with soap that he found while on holiday in France in August 2008. He was unable to find the soap for sale anywhere in the UK, so he travelled to Aleppo, Syria to see if he could import it directly.

His journey was a success, and he came back to England with the authentic olive and laurel soap, plus samples of beautiful jewellery that he had found locally. The feedback from friends and relative was very positive, so Mohammad started to design all of the branding and packaging – before he had even sold one piece.

This leap of faith paid off. Once the designs were completed, Mohammad had everything printed in Syria and then imported his first batch of products. He set up his first stall on St Albans market in November 2009. Four months on, he now also trades from Hitchin market and Liverpool Street in London.

Mohammed is certainly putting everything into the competition. “I am a very competitive man,” Mohammed admitted, “and when you get an opportunity like this, you just have to go for it! We have been preparing for these two weeks by bringing in new products and updating some of our branding and signage. We’re very excited – and can’t wait to see what Luton shoppers think about our products!”

“The jewellery designs are very distinctive and are recognisably different from much of the jewellery available in the UK. Aleppo soap is famous in France and the Middle East but little known in the UK. My product range will introduce customers to a range of gorgeous, natural body products at an affordable price.”

The range of Aleppo soaps sold by Inanna is made by traditional methods used for over 2000 years. Produced from local olive and laurel oil, Aleppo soap gently cleanses, nourishes and softens the skin. These products claim to be especially good for sensitive skin and can sooth mild skin complaints such as eczema. In addition, the villages around Aleppo producing the laurel oil are vulnerable communities, so opening a market to these products in the UK will also help support growth in these rural villages.

Although some of the jewellery is modern in style, many of the jewellery pieces sold by Inanna are based on traditional designs, some dating back to the Bronze Age and from the Ottoman period. Inanna offers a range of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings in silver set with semi-precious stones, including coral, amethyst, onyx, lapis lazuli and pearls.

Some of the necklaces and earrings are made using a technique in which the semi precious stones are inlaid with mother of pearl. These designs are particularly beautiful and unusual.
The other three finalists from The Mall Luton are: Plumbun from Luton, Humbers Homemade from Flitwick, and Urban Jewellery from Luton. During the two week trading period contestants get the use of a retail merchandising unit free of charge. After these two the winning trader from The Mall Luton will go through to the national finals. The local winner will be announced on 13th April 2010. However, whether or not they win the competition, each finalist gets an invaluable opportunity to maximise exposure of their business and test local shoppers’ acceptance of their product.
Ends.

A FRESH FACE FOR THE MALL LUTON AS NEW SIGNAGE IS UNVEILED

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

external-signage-010If you are in Luton town centre this week, you may notice some changes. The Mall Luton has just unveiled the next stage of its redevelopment programme this week as the external signage for the shopping centre has now been changed to ‘The Mall Luton’.

The rebranding of the centre began back in January 2006, when The Mall Corporation brought the shopping centre, which was then named The Arndale Centre. Since then, the centre has gradually moved towards the new branding, with the official postal address change occurring in September 2009 and the altering of the signage across the town completing this month.

The Mall Corporation has made many changes to the shopping centre, including incorporating their bright and contemporary colours to the indoor décor and external visage of the building, introducing the Ask Me Point which is located outside of Debenhams, and refurbishing the toilets and car parks.

Brian McFarland, General Manager of The Mall Luton, is delighted to see the rebranding completed. “Putting up the final sign really is a milestone for The Mall Luton. The Mall Corporation has made a significant investment in Luton since they bought the centre and this has allowed us to make it the clean, bright and popular shopping centre that it is today. We have kept retailer occupancy consistently at over 95 per cent, and visitors to The Mall Luton average an impressive 420,000 per week.

“It is this success that has facilitated the fantastic new St George’s Square development, which represents a £20 million investment in Luton. We’re very proud to have the new signs around the centre – but I can’t wait until we unveil the next one in St George’s Square later in the year!”

End.

SUPPORT THE FIRST MAKE YOUR MARK FINALIST THIS WEEK IN THE MALL LUTON!

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

mym-urnab-jewellery-023Luton shoppers are being encouraged to support Urban Jewellery, the first of four local finalists in the Make Your Mark in Retail 2010 competition, as the business trades for a nerve-wracking two week competition period from a retail merchandising unit (RMU) in The Mall Luton.

Urban Jewellery, an already well established business which has been trading in Luton’s Indoor Market for six years, will trade from the 1st to the 14th March 2010 from an RMU just outside WH Smith and JJB Sports in the shopping centre.

This bespoke jewellery and watch specialist is owned by 41 year old Habib Habchi. “The business began after my wife returned from a holiday in Turkey with a suitcase full of stunning jewellery. We wanted to share the beauty of the treasured Turkish stones, so we founded Urban Jewellery” explained Habib. The business started as a hobby but grew over the years, particularly after he diversified into watch repairs, jewellery repairs, jewellery re-modelling and watch battery replacement.

With an average footfall of approximately 420,000 in The Mall Luton per week and an RMU in a prime location, Habib is very excited about the opportunity to present his business to a larger audience. Whether or not he wins the competition, Habib still has big plans for the future, including launching an e-commerce site for his products, “like all businesses, I still hope to expand, and if I can use the internet for my business then I believe I still have more to give” he explains.

The other three finalists from The Mall Luton are: Plumbun from Luton, Humbers Homemade from Flitwick, and Inanna from Radlett. The Mall Luton received 15 entries in total, more than any other Mall in the UK, and the judges had a very difficult job narrowing it down to only four.

These four local finalists now have to compete against each other by completing a successful two week trading period on an RMU in the shopping centre. The contestants get to use the unit free of charge, whilst the judges evaluate them for their sales success, customer service and retailing skills. After these two weeks of trading the winning finalist from The Mall Luton will go through to the national heat. The overall prize consists of over £15,000 in business support including 6 months free trading in The Mall Luton and much more. The local winner will be announced on 13th April 2010. However, whether or not they win the competition, each finalist gets an invaluable opportunity to maximise exposure of their business.

Urban Jewellery will continue to trade from its location in the Luton Indoor Market throughout the competition and can be contacted on 01582 402 979.

Ends.
