LUTON IN HARMONY! JOIN HANDS AROUND THE MALL LUTON AND SUPPORT KEECH HOSPICE

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

hatm1Nobody has ever decided exactly how many people it takes to change a lightbulb. However, on the morning of Sunday 12 September 2010, local people are being invited to find out exactly how many people it takes to completely circle The Mall Luton, holding hands.

This spectacular event has been organised by Mall Cares to support the Keech Hospice Accumulator Challenge 2010, in which local businesses are being asked to turn £50 into, well, as much money as possible to support the local charity!

The event has also been designed to promote the popular Luton in Harmony campaign which is capturing the hearts of local residents.

The Mall Luton is looking for community groups, clubs, schools and associations to get involved by encouraging local people to take part. Not only does it hope to bring local people together, The Mall is hoping to take aerial photographs of the event, and may even manage to get into the record books! However the main aim of Hands around The Mall is to raise much needed funds for Keech Hospice Care, so all participants will be asked to make a small donation – all of which will go directly to the charity.

“This is an extremely exciting event,” explains Brian McFarland, General Manager, of The Mall Luton, “and we need as many local people as possible to get involved. We are convinced that this will be something that will be remembered for years to come, and hopefully the money we raise for Keech Hospice will make a difference for this extremely worthwhile charity.”

If you are involved in a local business, organisation or club, and would like more information about supporting the event or taking part in Hands around The Mall, please send an email with your contact details to lavinia.holland@themall.co.uk.

Another Chance to Win the Mighty Mall Colouring Competition!

Monday, May 24th, 2010

colouring-compThe team at The Mall Luton has a very unusual admission to make. In an effort to protect the data in the recent Mighty Mall Superhero colouring competition, the organisers inadvertently shredded the entry information before the judging could take place. The Mall still has the brilliant pictures from nearly 100 entries, but the judges now only have the names and contact details for 11 of these.

As shoppers in The Mall would have seen over recent weeks, all of the entries were incredible. The organisers were amazed at the effort and enthusiasm that all of the kids who entered showed - from young children of two, right up to the budding 16-year-old artists of the future.

So, to ensure that everyone has a fair chance of winning one of the five fantastic new Sony PSPs, which have been donated by the new Virgin Media store, the organisers have decided to extend the entry period until 31 May 2010. This allows entrants to come and pick up their original entry forms and resubmit them, and also opens the competition to anyone who missed the previous entry deadline.

Lavinia Holland, Marketing Manager of The Mall Luton, came up with the plan of action “When we realised what had happened we were mortified! We knew how much effort all of the children made who entered the competition - many of whom have been coming up to the Ask Me Point in the centre to find out when the winners will be announced. We want to make every effort to reunite the artists with their original entries so that they can resubmit them - and make sure that everyone has a fair chance of winning one of these brilliant prizes.”

What to do if you have already entered:

If you, or one of your children entered this competition, simply come to the Ask Me point outside Marks & Spencer in the shopping centre to identify your entry. The team at The Mall is not able to show you all the entries, so please make sure that you can describe your entry in as much detail as possible. Only entries that are clearly identified will be re-entered into the competition.

What to do if you would like to enter for the first time:

The Mighty Mall Superhero Competition is open to kids aged between 4 and 16 years and is supported by the new Virgin Media Store, in partnership with the L&D Express . To enter, simply click here to download an entry form or visit the Ask Me Point in The Mall.

The competition is simple - just draw a picture of your favourite superhero. It could be a hero that we have all heard of, like Superman or Wonder Woman, or it could be one that you have made up. Either way don’t forget to colour it in!
When it’s ready, simply drop your completed entry form in to the Ask Me Point in The Mall Luton outside Marks and Spencer before 31 May 2010.

The five age groups are:
up to 4 years
5 - 7 years
8 - 10 years
11 - 13 years
14 - 16 years

The winner of each age group will receive a brand new Sony PSP courtesy of Virgin Media.

Good Luck!

FIRST EVER FANCY DRESS FASHION SHOW DAZZLES SHOPPERS AT THE MALL LUTON!

Friday, May 7th, 2010

img_2837It may have been raining over the Bank Holiday weekend but there was more than enough fun to dazzle shoppers in The Mall Luton on Saturday. The UK’s very first ‘Costume Catwalk’ took place, hosted by The Mall’s Pure Party.

Eight professional models impressed the crowds, showcasing the most popular fancy dress outfits in town on a purpose built catwalk in Central Square. Batman and Robin were joined by Wonderwoman and Michael Jackson and even Tinkerbell made an appearance, which particularly delighted the children… and some of the dads!

The costumes, which appeared during the four shows throughout the day, were from Rubies Masquerade Company and Smiffys; two of the most popular and high quality fancy dress brand names on the market and found on the shelves at Pure Party. This was perfect for shoppers going to Stag or Hen parties, or for those who just love to dress up!

THE MALL LUTON ANNOUNCES THAT INANNA HAS MADE ITS MARK IN RETAIL

Friday, April 16th, 2010

mym-inanna-015The Mall Luton has today announced that Inanna from Radlett has been crowned Luton’s winner of the Make Your Mark in Retail competition, sponsored by NatWest, and is through to the national finals that will see one winner awarded with a business start-up prize worth more than £15,000.

Inanna, a soap and jewellery business run by Mohammad Malkawi, was selected as a result of its indisputable attention to customer care, high sales figures, growth aspirations and strong passion for their product - Syrian soap and jewellery. Less than a year ago Mohammed found the beautiful Syrian soap in France that he was unable to find for sale anywhere in the UK, so he travelled to Aleppo, Syria to see if he could import it directly. He arrived back with authentic olive and laurel soap, plus samples of beautiful jewellery that he had found locally and began trading as Inanna. Since then, he has sourced it, imported it, retailed it and has now earned himself the opportunity of a lifetime.

The brain behind the business is 32 year old Mohammad Malkawi from Radlett. He comments, “I’m delighted to have been selected as Luton’s winner, and am proud to be representing the town in this national contest. I’ve always wanted to launch my own business and this competition provided me with the ideal opportunity to give that dream a shot, and the good news is it seems to be going down well.”

The competition, which runs across 19 shopping centres nationwide, has really caught the imagination of the public with well over 120 entries made UK-wide.

Lavinia Holland, Marketing Manager at The Mall Luton comments: “This year we’ve seen some really strong applicants which has been a real pleasure and a positive sign for the future retail market. Now we’ve all got to get behind Inanna as they go for national glory; we’re keeping our fingers firmly crossed that in May they will prove victorious for Luton.”

NatWest, sponsors of the Make Your Mark in Retail competition, will be offering business support and banking advice to Inanna on account of winning the regional heat. Chris Harvey, Director of NatWest Branch Business Banking says, “This competition is a great opportunity for businesses and entrepreneurs to get their business idea underway or move it forward. We congratulate Mohammed on his achievement and wish him the best for the national judging. ”

Judging for the final winner of the Make Your Mark in Retail competition will take place on April 27th 2010.

NOTE TO EDITORS:

The competition enables entrants the opportunity to test their business on a Retail Merchandising Unit (RMU) and the outstanding candidate is rewarded with a ‘retail start up package’ that includes:

• Hands on support from The Mall

SUGAR AND SPICE AND ALL THINGS NICE - THAT’S WHAT PLUMBUN’S CAKES ARE MADE OF.

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

make-your-mark-plumbun-010For Lutonian cake-maker Lois Lawrence there is no such thing as just one more slice! Lois is the owner of Plumbun, a company that creates and sells sumptuous cupcakes and cakes – and she is the fourth local finalist from The Mall Luton in the national Make Your Mark in Retail competition.

Plumbun has already set up shop in a retail merchandising unit (RMU) in the shopping centre to compete for a place in the finals of this national competition. Over the two week test-trading period Plumbun will be judged on their customer service, sales performance and retailing skills. If Lois gets through this local round, she could be in with a chance of winning a top prize worth over £15,000, including six months free RMU trading space in The Mall Luton and a place at an internationally renowned retail summer school.

Inspired by her mother who was a head cook and who taught Lois to bake from a very early age, Lois has created her own range of recipes; tweaking and enhancing old favourites, as well as creating new ideas, and fulfilling specific requests from clients.

Having run a general catering business in London, Lois moved back to Luton three and a half years ago having gradually realised that her passion was for baking. So, with marketing support from her daughter Corinne O’Sullivan, Plumbun was born and Lois started to concentrate on creating the cakes and buns that have already built her a fine reputation.

Plumbun started selling at music and community festivals, but the business has grown through recommendations and referrals. “Being in The Mall Luton has already surpassed my expectation. Adding to the excitement of being in this competition, I have received eight orders for celebration cakes and cup-cake towers for birthdays in the last two days alone – which is wonderful.” Lois explains, “It has been brilliant to test my cakes with a larger audience, and I am just delighted that people in Luton have been so supportive and are interested in my products.”

The competition has enabled Lois to recruit her very first member of staff - a local catering student - and Lois is also looking forward to building a solid customer base in the area and moving into local farmers markets. In the future, Lois would love to open a glorious Plumbun store in Luton.

All of Plumbun’s products are free from artificial flavourings, colourings and preservatives and some ingredients, such as eggs, are sourced from local farms. Lois is confident that customers will be able to actually taste the quality and freshness, ensuring that her range will stand out from run-of-the-mill commercially produced cakes.

The three other finalists from The Mall Luton are: Urban Jewellery, Humbers Homemade and Inanna. The winning finalist from Luton will be announced on the 13th April 2010.

THE MALL LUTON TO TRIAL CRUCIAL BATTERY RECYCLING INITIATIVE

Friday, March 26th, 2010

recycling-bin-010The Mall Luton is set to become one of the first shopping centres in the UK to trial an end-of-life battery recycling scheme for shoppers. Teaming up with leading battery manufacturer Varta and recycling provider BatteryBack, it will provide a collection point in the centre for visitors to dispose of their old batteries from the 1st February. The trial has been designed to coincide with the UK’s 1st February launch of the Batteries Directive, a new EU-wide ruling that imposes strict targets on the manufacturing, collection and recycling of batteries.

The Batteries Directive aims to cut down on the 600 million waste batteries that end up in landfill each year, and to help consumers play their part in Luton, an end-of-life battery collection point will be placed in The Mall shopping centre. To encourage take up of the scheme, which will be rolled out in Malls across the UK if successful, Varta will be providing free batteries to the first 1,000 people who visit the centre to recycle their old ones.

Every year, the average UK household disposes of more than 21 batteries as part of their general waste. This translates to over 22 tonnes of waste batteries sent to landfill annually. With experts predicting that the UK will run out of landfill space in the next few years, increasing battery recycling rates is a crucial way of trying to reverse this trend.

Lavinia Holland, Marketing Manager at The Mall Luton is keen to stress the importance of the scheme: “The UK is lagging behind its European neighbours with regards to battery recycling. The key to improving recycling rates here is making sure households have easily accessible drop-off points, so that’s why we will be placing highly visible collection points throughout the centre. Our shoppers in Luton have always been very supportive of our recycling campaigns in the past, and I’m sure we will have the same success this time around.”

The batteries recycling trial forms part of The Mall’s EnviroMall initiative, a commitment to reducing the impact of its shopping centres on the environment. It comes on the back of the Come Home for Christmas campaign, which helped raise over £10,000 for the charity Missing People by recycling old mobile phones. The scheme is also being supported by BatteryBack, one of the largest suppliers of collection and recycling for the coming directive.

GIANT BUTTERFLIES AND CARD CREATIONS FOR SPECIAL MUMS AT THE MALL LUTON

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

sienna-nicolson-4-and-mum-angela-baldwinThe Mall Luton was buzzing with creative children last Sunday, as 110 local kids attended February’s Funday Sunday Kids’ Club! The children had a wonderful time cutting, sticking, colouring-in and taking photographs to create personalised cards to give to their mums this Mother’s Day.

The Mall Luton provided the space and the materials (plus the messy paint and glue of course!) to ensure that every child took home a card they could be very proud of.

Lavinia Holland, Marketing Manager at The Mall Luton said “It was lovely to see so many children having such fun making cards for their mums. Mother’s Day is a brilliant way to reward all those busy mothers who do so much for their families and don’t often get a ‘thank-you’!”

Funday Sundays take place on the last Sunday of each month between 11am and 4pm at The Mall Luton. The next event is on Sunday 28th March, where children will be celebrating Easter and the new release of Alice in Wonderland film. In true Luton tradition, kids will be able to make their own “Mad Hatter” hat! All children are invited and there is no cost to join.
