SUPPORT THE FIRST MAKE YOUR MARK FINALIST THIS WEEK IN THE MALL LUTON!

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

mym-urnab-jewellery-023Luton shoppers are being encouraged to support Urban Jewellery, the first of four local finalists in the Make Your Mark in Retail 2010 competition, as the business trades for a nerve-wracking two week competition period from a retail merchandising unit (RMU) in The Mall Luton.

Urban Jewellery, an already well established business which has been trading in Luton’s Indoor Market for six years, will trade from the 1st to the 14th March 2010 from an RMU just outside WH Smith and JJB Sports in the shopping centre.

This bespoke jewellery and watch specialist is owned by 41 year old Habib Habchi. “The business began after my wife returned from a holiday in Turkey with a suitcase full of stunning jewellery. We wanted to share the beauty of the treasured Turkish stones, so we founded Urban Jewellery” explained Habib. The business started as a hobby but grew over the years, particularly after he diversified into watch repairs, jewellery repairs, jewellery re-modelling and watch battery replacement.

With an average footfall of approximately 420,000 in The Mall Luton per week and an RMU in a prime location, Habib is very excited about the opportunity to present his business to a larger audience. Whether or not he wins the competition, Habib still has big plans for the future, including launching an e-commerce site for his products, “like all businesses, I still hope to expand, and if I can use the internet for my business then I believe I still have more to give” he explains.

The other three finalists from The Mall Luton are: Plumbun from Luton, Humbers Homemade from Flitwick, and Inanna from Radlett. The Mall Luton received 15 entries in total, more than any other Mall in the UK, and the judges had a very difficult job narrowing it down to only four.

These four local finalists now have to compete against each other by completing a successful two week trading period on an RMU in the shopping centre. The contestants get to use the unit free of charge, whilst the judges evaluate them for their sales success, customer service and retailing skills. After these two weeks of trading the winning finalist from The Mall Luton will go through to the national heat. The overall prize consists of over £15,000 in business support including 6 months free trading in The Mall Luton and much more. The local winner will be announced on 13th April 2010. However, whether or not they win the competition, each finalist gets an invaluable opportunity to maximise exposure of their business.

Urban Jewellery will continue to trade from its location in the Luton Indoor Market throughout the competition and can be contacted on 01582 402 979.

Ends.

PHELANS JEWELLERS: NEW STORE IS A SPARKLING SUCCESS FOR MILTON KEYNES

Phelans New Store thecentre:mk

Phelans Jewellers in Milton Keynes is proving to be a sparkling success story amid the challenging retail environment on the high street. The stylish and high quality family jewellers is set to move to a new, bigger store in thecentre:mk on the 27 November 2009, thanks to the continuous growth it has achieved since moving to the shopping centre three years ago.

This growth, despite the recession and decreased consumer spending over the past 18 months, has been achieved because of Phelans Jewellers’ carefully crafted and enviable reputation for designing and creating fine jewellery of exception quality, but offering true value for money because of the low overheads involved in running the family business.

The new store, situated on Crown Walk in thecentre:mk is bright and stylish with a glass façade and clean, simple lines. Much like the jewellery inside, the store is elegant and timeless, and will definitely be a highlight for many of the millions of shoppers who visit the shopping centre every year. The store was designed by the renowned Tait Design consultancy in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

The business, owned by local man Simon Phelan, has a loyal and devoted customer base, in some cases stretching back over decades from when the company was established in 1968 in Luton by Peter Phelan, Simon’s father.
The team at Phelans Jewellers makes many items to order, working closely with clients to create jewellery that will be treasured for years to come. The store has one of the largest selections of unique solitaire diamond rings in thecentre:mk with all larger diamonds carefully selected and mounted in-house and certified by the best independent laboratories in the world, the I.G.I and the G.I.A.

“This store expansion for Phelans is absolutely fantastic news,” commented Robert Goodman, Centre Director for thecentre:mk. “Independent stores such as Phelans provide our customers with a rich and diverse retail experience supporting thecentre:mk as a regional shopping destination. As we approach Christmas thecentre:mk is approaching the 100% let mark and it’s stores such as Phelans which are driving this activity.”

Unlike other high street stores, Phelans Jewellers has its own state of the art, local workshop where all special orders, repairs and valuations are undertaken by its own master craftsmen. This means that repairs, resizing, re-mounting or remodeling can be undertaken quickly and personally, the majority taking less than a week to complete.
The old store at 102 Silbury Arcade will continue to open to cope with the Christmas demand and will close down officially at the end of December 2009.

Ends.
