JAM GETS FLITWICK MUM OUT OF A PICKLE AND INTO A NATIONAL COMPETITION

Friday, March 26th, 2010

mym-humbers-homemade-014Life was a bit of a pickle for Flitwick mum Vickie Humber in 2007. Suffering from a nervous breakdown, the mum of four was struggling to even leave the house. However, one day Vickie was inspired to make some jam using recipes that she had used as a little girl with her mum and grandmother. A few weeks later, when the hall cupboard was completely full of preserves, Vickie’s husband encouraged her take it to a local vintage tractor rally to see whether she could sell it. It was a great success, and this was the start of Vickie’s recovery and a new business: Humbers Homemade.

Two and a half years later, Humbers Homemade is a thriving local business, appearing at all of the farmers market in Bedfordshire, and some in Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire & Northamptonshire, and supplying local shops, restaurants and hotels such as Woburn Abbey and Flitwick Manor.

Humbers Homemade is also one of the four local finalists, supported by The Mall Luton, in the national Make Your Mark in Retail 2010 competition. With over £15,000 worth of prizes up for grabs, including six months’ free trading in The Mall and a place at an internationally recognised retail school, the competition could offer one business owner the opportunity of a lifetime.

All four of the local traders now have to trade for two weeks from a retail merchandising unit (RMU) in The Mall Luton, during which time they will be evaluated for their customer service, sales performance and retailing skills. The finalist from Luton will then go through to the national finals, and the overall winner will be announced on 10 May 2010.

“This competition is a wonderful opportunity for me,” explained Vickie. “Humbers Homemade is all about local produce, so I’m really excited to see what shoppers in Luton make of our products. We spent loads of time making sure that everything was ready for these two weeks as we’re absolutely determined to give it our best shot! I think that Bedfordshire has a lot to be proud of, and winning this competition would really help us to grow Humbers Homemade and, hopefully, get Bedfordshire jams and preserves in shops and delis across the country.”
The other three finalists from The Mall Luton are Urban Jewellery, Inanna from Radlett, and Plumbun from Luton. Regardless of whether one of our local traders wins the national competition, each finalist will have received a fabulous opportunity to maximise exposure of their business and test local shoppers’ acceptance of their product during the two week test-trading period.
Ends.

THE CLOCK IS TICKING. DON’T MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO WIN FREE RETAIL SPACE AT THE MALL LUTON

Friday, February 5th, 2010

mall-luton-logoThe deadline of 14 February 2010 for the Make Your Mark in Retail competition is fast approaching, and The Mall Luton is encouraging small businesses and budding entrepreneurs to submit their entries as soon as possible. With a top prize worth over £15,000, including six month’s rent-free retail space, one national winner could expand their business, or get it off the ground, with virtually no out-goings.

The competition is the perfect opportunity for entrepreneurs with new products to sell, retailers who want to test their sales strategies with consumers before opening a shop, or small businesses that want to expand. In addition to prime trading space, the winner will receive free business banking for two years, access to a business relationship manager for advice about financial decisions, a free place on the National Skills Academy Retail Masterclass, and a free place on the exclusive BSSA Oxford Summer School which is always fully booked and operates an extensive waiting list.

Make Your Mark in Retail is part of a national competition organised in partnership with Natwest, Enterprise UK and The National Skills Academy. It was first launched in November 2007 to help support and grow new business in Malls across the UK. Last year, the overall winners were chosen from the applicants at The Mall Luton, and the team in Luton is eager to see a local entrepreneur be successful again in 2010. Terry and Janis Loran from Toddington, last year’s winners, noticed a gap in the market for personalised merchandise for special occasions. Aged 59, Terry was made redundant and decided to enter and set up “Initially Yours”, proving that it is never too late to start your own business.

His wife Janis explains: “The competition was definitely well worth entering. Provided you adopt the right attitude and are prepared to put in the effort, Make Your Mark in Retail may just make a real difference to your business and your life.”

Brian McFarland, General Manager of The Mall Luton agrees: “This is a competition that really could change someone’s life. So many people dream of working for themselves but don’t have the money or experience to even get their ideas off the ground. This competition allows people to test their business or products without taking huge risks, and with a tremendous amount of support from a network of expert advisors. We were delighted when Terry and Janis won last year, and we know that there are lots of local people with the ideas and enthusiasm to equal this success in 2010.”

End.

MAKE YOUR MARK IN RETAIL RETURNS

Monday, January 18th, 2010

the-mallThe Mall Luton is back on the look out for the shops of the future

On 4 January 2010 The Mall Luton launched its hunt once again to find the retailers of the future as part of nationwide competition, Make Your Mark in Retail.

This year, in an unprecedented move, The Mall’s 19 centres are not the only ones looking for the next big thing in retail, as the UK’s leading operator of community shopping centres teams up with other major national landlords including Capital Shopping Centres to extend the competition to nearly 30 UK shopping centres.

Seeking entrants with a unique retail concept, the competition offers regional winners the chance to trade in leading shopping centres such as The Mall Luton. Then on the basis of their success over two weeks, one national winner is awarded a start-up package that includes six months rent-free trade, allowing them to get their business off the ground with virtually no outgoings.

Last year’s winners, Terry and Janis Loran, from Toddington noticed a gap in the market for personalised merchandise for special occasions. Aged 59, Terry was made redundant and decided to enter and set up “Initially Yours” and his victory serves as evidence that it is never too late to start your own business.

His wife Janis explains: “The competition was definitely well worth entering. Provided you adopt the right attitude and are prepared to put in the effort, Make Your Mark in Retail may just make a real difference to your business and your life.”

Brian McFarland, General Manager of The Mall Luton adds: “There really is no other competition of this sort available to budding retail entrepreneurs. With retail going through a phase of major change and unemployment at its highest for a generation, now is the perfect time to turn an idea into a career. The competition has been a great success over the past two years and is just getting better and better. All you need is that unique idea and the determination to build a dream, so we encourage the people of Luton to come down to The Mall to enter – this year could just be Luton’s year.”
